"Pour me another cup, Vi honey" the man mumbled over his paper.
His command met with silence, Dignan lowers the pages in his hand. He's startled to find his gaze met with a contemptuous stare from his wife.
"Vi, I'm talking to you"
"VI!" he shouts with rising frustration.
She leaps up shouting, "Vi, vile, violent, villaness! I hate being called Vi, my godamn name is VIOLET!"
"Sorry I didn't know that" he replied.
"We've known each other for 15 years, how can you not know that?" she demands.
"How can you be married to me, like me, if you don't even know me?"
"Honey" he snorts and picks up his paper again, "You are so naive".
"Everyone loves each other, but no one really likes each other."

I'm thinking of that line in the Jane Austen book club where Prudie, trying to choose an Austen work says she's increasingly drawn to a book's elegiac tones. Well I find I'm increasingly drawn to books with elegiac tones. Case in point: the Great Gatsby. I read it in high school, I hated it. Its now if not my favourite, close to my favourite book. Other books I love: Brideshead Revisited, I Capture the Castle, The Virgin Suicides, The Painted Veil, Atonement, etc etc. ALL TRAGIC? YES! I chose my English section this semester because the topic is "Lives ruined by love"-- is it awesome? totally! What does that say about me?

* Love me, because love doesn't exist, and I have tried everything that does.
* Her life was a slow realization that the world was not for her, and that for whatever reason, she would never be happy and honest at the same time. She felt as if she were brimming, always producing and hoarding more love inside her. But there was no release. table, ivory elephant charm, rainbow, onion, hairdo, violence, melodrama, honey...None of it moved her. She addressed the world honestly, searching for something deserving of the volumes of love she knew she had within her, but to each she would have to say, I don't love you.

"You know what Gage?!" a frustrated Linley cries.
"What?" he says, a question forming in his eyes.
"I really hate one word answers."
"Yah?" the man threw back with a defiant shrug.
"I swear to God if you don't tell me.. If you don't spit it out I'll..."
"I'll.. damnit if you love me just give me an answer that's more than one word!" she pleads.
"We're over" was his reply.
Looking back on it, Linley came to the realization that two word answers really weren't any better.
